A professor of Public Health at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Tanimola Akande, has insisted that no evidence abounds to support the claim that taking a hot bath can affect fertility in men.
While describing it as a common myth, he noted that there is no scientific evidence to prove that taking a hot bath has any effect on fertility.
A report published by India Times and circulated on Nigerian social media platforms claimed that high temperatures during a hot bath can cause the testicles to overheat, lowering sperm motility and count.
The report noted that increased heat can also damage sperm’s DNA integrity and general quality, which can result in anomalies in the size and shape of sperm.
Reacting to the report, the public health physician insisted it is a misconception with no scientific basis.
He explained that hot baths can help to relax muscles and reduce stress, as well as improve circulation and increase the production of endorphins.
Akande stressed that taking a hot bath can simply be a relaxing and enjoyable experience and is capable of providing a moment of peace and relaxation in a hectic world.
“This is a misconception. Bathing with very hot water is, however, discomforting. It is unlikely that anyone will want to bath with very hot water.
“This is a misconception. There is no scientific basis for this claim that hot water will affect the testes.
“The belief that men are not expected to bathe with hot water is a myth or misconception. Hot water can be beneficial for both men and women, as it helps to relax muscles, open pores, and cleanse the skin.
“Hot water baths can be beneficial to both men and women as it relaxes the muscles and cleanses the skin.
“However, excessive exposure to hot water can lead to dryness and irritation, so it’s essential to find a balance and not overdo it regardless of whether you are a man or woman”, Akande advised.
