The Chairman of Bichi Local Government Area of Kano State, Dr Yusuf Muhammad Sabo, has flagged off the treatment of about 3000 wells with chlorine as part of his efforts to tackle water-borne diseases among residents.
The wells are spread across the 11 wards of the Council.
While flagging off the one-week exercise at the popular Kwakware well, in Sabon Gari area of Bichi, Dr. Sabo, a medical practitioner, lamented the rate of water-borne diseases experienced last year in the Council.
He pledged that he would do everything possible to protect the lives of the people of Bichi.
According to him, approval was sought and obtained from Kano state Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, for the initiative to take off.
He told the leadership of Kano Correspondents’ Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), who paid him a courtesy visit, after covering the event, that the essence of the programme was to ensure that the people of Bichi Local Government Area, have clean and hygienic water for their daily use.
According to him, the gesture will help immensely in curtailing the spread of communicable diseases in society, especially those diseases that can be spread through drinking unclean water.
He urged the people of Bichi Local Government Area to support the initiative by ensuring that their wells are treated with the chlorine solution.
A resident of Sabon Gari, Malam Mamman commended the commitment of Dr. Sabo, for the initiative and promised to accord all the necessary support to ensure that the stated goals were achieved.
In his brief remarks, the Chairman of Kano Correspondents’ Chapel, Alhaji Aminu Garko said: “As members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm, we have been following your track records; and congratulate you for this laudable project.”
